The Entity Engineering Quick Start: Your First 30 Days

Your 30-day action plan ยท part of The Beginner’s Guide to Entity Engineering

You can make real progress on your entity in a single month, with a spreadsheet and no enterprise tool. This is the plan: four weeks to audit what machines believe about you, fix your home base, declare yourself in schema, align your profiles, and earn your first honest mention โ€” then your first Wikidata item in month two. Work it in order, because each week builds on the one before. The printable checklist below is the same plan, laid out to check off as you go.

What can you do in the next 30 days?

Run this week-by-week plan in order โ€” audit, fix your home base, add schema, align your profiles, start corroboration โ€” then create your first Wikidata item in month two. None of it needs a specialist; it needs a few focused hours each week and the discipline to do the weeks in sequence.

  • Week 1 โ€” Audit. Search your business name in Google, in an AI assistant, and in Google Maps. Write down what the machines currently believe: name variants, wrong details, missing facts, and confusions with similarly named businesses. That list is your work order.
  • Week 1 โ€” Fix home base. Make your website state the basics plainly: exact name, what you do, where you are, who runs it, real contact details, and an About page a stranger could verify. One page that answers “who is this?” beats ten pages of slogans.
  • Week 2 โ€” Add schema. Publish Organization (or LocalBusiness) JSON-LD sitewide, plus Person schema for your principals, with sameAs links to every profile you actually maintain. Then validate it in Google’s Rich Results Test.
  • Week 3 โ€” Align your profiles. Claim your Google Business Profile and your industry’s key directories. Make your name, address, and phone character-for-character identical everywhere, and retire or redirect duplicates.
  • Week 4 โ€” Start corroboration. Earn one honest third-party mention: a local paper, an industry publication, a supplier’s partner page, a professional association listing. One verifiable mention from a source you don’t control outweighs any burst of self-promotion.
  • Ongoing โ€” Answer questions in your content. Restructure your key pages so each opens with the question a customer asks and answers it in the first sentence. That one habit serves human readers, search snippets, and AI citation at the same time.
  • Month two โ€” Your first Wikidata item. Once your site and profiles agree with each other, give your organization a home in the knowledge base machines trust most, and reference every statement to an independent source. Built honestly, one item anchors your identity for every system that reads Wikidata.

What should you not waste time on?

Skip anything that promises to shortcut this โ€” bulk directory blasts, fake reviews, and keyword-stuffed schema โ€” because the systems reading your entity record were built to detect exactly those, and a poisoned record is harder to fix than an empty one. There is no volume play here: machines weight independence and consistency, not how many low-quality listings carry your name. Do the honest version once and it compounds; do the shortcut and you spend month two cleaning it up.

When the plan raises questions it does not answer โ€” and it will, because every business’s entity situation is its own puzzle โ€” the book is the next step. Entity Engineering by Kim Harris goes into working depth on every stop above, from Wikidata items that survive review to defending your entity when a machine gets you wrong.
