Measuring and Defending Your Entity

Part 6 of 7 ยท The Beginner’s Guide to Entity Engineering

You measure entity strength by asking the machines three questions: can they find you, resolve you correctly, and corroborate you? You do not need an enterprise tool to answer them. A spreadsheet and a monthly habit are enough. This chapter gives you that habit, tells you what to watch each month, explains what to do when a machine gets you wrong, and shows why the low-cost method works. Measurement is what turns entity work from a one-time cleanup into a practice.

How do I know if entity engineering is working?

You find out by asking the machines and checking three things: can they find you, resolve you correctly, and corroborate you? These three map to the whole discipline. Finding you means you appear at all. Resolving you means the machine returns the right you, with the right facts. Corroborating you means outside sources back up what you say.

Run the check the same way each time and write down what you see. Search your name and your main services, look at what a machine says about you, and note whether each of the three is improving, holding, or slipping. Logged month over month, that record shows the trend, and the trend is the real answer. The book builds this into a fuller set of metrics; to start, the three-question check is enough to tell you whether the work is landing.

What should I watch each month?

Each month, watch three signals: your Knowledge Panel or Business Profile filling in and staying accurate, AI answers naming you with the right facts, and branded searches trending up. Together they show whether machines and people are converging on the same clear picture of you.

Take them one at a time. Your Business Profile should get more complete and stay correct, not drift. AI assistants, asked about you, should describe you accurately rather than vaguely or wrongly. And branded searches, people typing your name, should tick upward over time, because entity strength and brand strength feed each other. None of these needs a paid dashboard. Each is something you can check by hand and log in a column.

What happens when machines get me wrong?

When a machine gets you wrong, it is usually entity confusion, a namesake or a mislabel, and it is fixable, but only if you catch it. Confusion happens when a machine merges you with someone who shares your name, or attaches the wrong facts to your record. It is common, and it is quiet, which is why a monthly check matters.

Picture two businesses named Rivera Dental, one in Tucson and one three states away. If a machine blends them, your hours, reviews, or address can show up attached to the wrong one. The fix starts with noticing, then correcting the sources that feed the confusion, so the machine has clean, consistent signals to separate you again. Handling a determined attack or a stubborn misinformation problem is a deeper subject the book takes up; the beginner move is to catch confusion early, while it is still small.

Can I do this without expensive tools?

Yes. A spreadsheet and a repeatable monthly habit are enough to start, with no enterprise tool required. The checks that matter most, searching your name, asking an AI assistant about you, and looking at your Business Profile, are all free. What makes them powerful is doing them on a schedule and writing down the result.

The value is in the record, not the software. A simple sheet with a row per month and a column per signal will show you a trend that no single snapshot can. Paid tools can help later, when you are tracking many entities or a large site. At the beginning, the habit beats the tool, and the habit costs nothing but a few minutes a month.
